Set location notifications for friends in Find My on Mac
Wednesday, October 16 , [ Tweets ] [ Favorites ]. Interesting: in Find My in iOS 13, the subject of a notification is told you set up a notification. In Find My Friends in the iOS 12 era, you could quietly notify yourself about a friend without them knowing. I could notify myself when she leaves her current location. The person being tracked has already consented and can revoke the permission whenever they want.
They can also already see in the app when they are being tracked. Some sort of notification may make sense to remind people who have forgotten that they enabled this feature years ago.
But a notification for every single use is really annoying. Many people use this feature to avoid bothering the person. If your worry is that someone will gain access to your phone and start tracking you without your knowledge, that person would likely turn off the notifications, leaving you none the wiser.
And, of course, they could still track you simply by leaving the Find My app open, without using the geofence feature. So how is this really improving privacy? I noticed this last week. This will be annoying for my wife, I set notifications for when she get to a certain location for dinner prep on my end. Yeah, I used this all the time in 12 to know when my kids were on the way with my ex so I could be ready. I use this a lot with my wife to facilitate family coordination.
Works as it did in iOS This basically kills the feature for me. Nobody I know will use notifications anymore either. Relationships end, and sometimes they end badly. It's good to have a reminder that this feature exists, and is enabled. Maybe this notification doesn't need to be sent every time, but on the other hand, some of these comments read to me a little bit like "I was doing something slightly creepy, and now people will see when I'm doing it, so I'm not doing it anymore," which sounds to me like it's perhaps a positive outcome overall.
Lukas Yeah, there is an oddity to this feature that the change might actually be positive. Yeah, basically I think this feature is a move against abusive spouses. So I am responsible for picking up our daughter and preparing for dinner. Before iOS 13, I could set up a notification like: "Notify me when my wife leaves work so that I can go pick up our daughter and start preparing for dinner". This has been very helpful and worked perfectly.
But since iOS 13 when they added the notification I knew it would alert my wife but I just kept using it my wife started to get annoyed and would argue with me, and said "Do you have too much free time to stalk me? She was probably busy when I set up those alerts.
I didn't intend to bombard her with notifications but now it basically turned me into a creepy stalker. I could imagine my wife getting angry. She was probably at her last hour or so at work, the busiest time, and then her phone pops up messages saying "your husband is stalking you when you leave" I would be mad too if I were in her situation.
It makes me look so stupid too. So since then I stopped using notifications and manually check her status. This has to be one of the most useless and stupid feature Apple has made recently. My wife has given out permission to see her location.
Why does she have to be spammed by these notifications? It's not even a privacy issue. I switched to using the LIFE app. This app was overkill on the features for me. I tested LIFE with my wife got months to see how it worked. BUT, I am not interested in tracking my family driving patterns. If I use that app i need to set up a new alert every time they got to work or school. I can setup a 1 time or repeating alert.
BUT the reoccurring alert relates only to me. Like previous posts said it is worthless to me. I hardly ever looked at the app before, let alone where everyone was. Totally agree! Consent has been made when we set up Find My. I think we should create a petition to urge Apple to roll back to the iOS 12 way. E-mail will not be published. Web site. Drang : I noticed this last week.
Nick : This will be annoying for my wife, I set notifications for when she get to a certain location for dinner prep on my end. Tony Scida : Yeah, I used this all the time in 12 to know when my kids were on the way with my ex so I could be ready. Maik Musall : I use this a lot with my wife to facilitate family coordination. Kyle Howells : This basically kills the feature for me. I was searching about this topic and came across this page.
I totally agree with you on this. The new Find My in iOS 13 basically made me an annoying stalker. My wife is a busy person, works long hours and have overtime a lot. I am a disabled person and my job is part time and is relatively short. Before iOS 13, I could set up a notification like: "Notify me when my wife leaves work so that I can go pick up our daughter and start preparing for dinner" This has been very helpful and worked perfectly.
I agree! LIFE seems hated by parents and kids in posts. Thank you!

Sandy Writtenhouse on October 28, The Find My app , available on iOS and Mac, is a terrific tool for staying up to date on where your favorite people go and tracking down missing devices, all in one spot. With the host of features in the Find My app, one that stands out is the Notification function. You can receive an alert when someone else leaves or arrives at a location as well as notify them when you leave or arrive at yours. Not only are these notifications convenient for staying in-the-know but they can help you and your loved ones have peace of mind.

When iOS 13 comes out — possibly as soon as this coming week — you might notice a couple of blank spaces on your iPhone or iPad's home screen. That's because Apple has taken two of its apps, Find My iPhone and Find My Friends, and collapsed them into a single app, with the somewhat sensible but also slightly unwieldy name Find My. Fear not, though: pretty much all of the functionality from those apps has made it into their replacement. Find My mainly serves as a chance for Apple to redesign those apps, bringing all their location-related finding services under one roof, whether you use Find My to track an iPhone or locate your friends. Here's a quick overview of what's included in the Find My app based on the iOS 13 public beta and how to get the most out of it. There are two primary facets to the Find My app, and helpfully each gets their own icon in the toolbar at the bottom of the app: People and Devices. The People tab allows you to see the location of your friends and family who have elected to share their location with you, or with whom you're sharing your location. From there you can get directions to people, add labels to locations, or set up notifications triggered by locations either yours or theirs. The Devices tab allows you to locate any of your compatible Apple devices, as well as take additional actions like playing sounds through their speakers, marking them as lost, or even erasing them. Finally, the Find My app also contains a Me tab, which allows you to enable or disable sharing your location for all contacts, turn on or off friend requests and set a custom name for your current location.
All about Find My Friends
The combined app, now called Apple Find My, has a new look but it works the same way it always has. So if you were to, Heaven forbid, lose your new iPhone 11 or iPhone 11 Pro , you could still track it down using your iCloud account. The new Find My app joins a healthy list of new features Apple added to iOS 13 and iPadOS , including dark mode , a swear-resistant gesture keyboard or is it? The People tab is where you'll find any of your contacts that were previously in the Find My Friends app, including anyone in your Apple Family Sharing group. A map takes up most of the screen, with a list of your contacts down below.
Although there are legitimate concerns about sharing your location willy-nilly, Find My Friends gives everyone full control over what they share, making it truly helpful for families and close friends. In their conversation, tap the i button, tap Share My Location, and in the popover that appears, tap Share Indefinitely. Share for One Hour and Share Until End of Day are useful for temporarily sharing your location while traveling, say, to visit colleagues with whom permanent sharing would be inappropriate.
Use the new Find My app to hunt down your friends and your iPhone
