This volume trace ways in which time is represented in reverse forms throughout modernist culture, from the beginning of the twentieth century until the decade after World War II.

Though modernism is often associated with revolutionary or futurist directions, this book argues instead that a retrograde dimension is embedded within it. By juxtaposing the literature of Europe and North America with that of Australia and New Zealand, it suggests how this antipodean context serves to defamiliarize and reconceptualize normative modernist understandings of temporal progression. Backgazing thus moves beyond the treatment of a specific geographical periphery as another margin on the expanding field of 'New Modernist Studies'.

Instead, it offers a systematic investigation of the transformative effect of retrograde dimensions on our understanding of canonical modernist texts. The title, 'backgazing', is taken from Australian poet Robert G. FitzGerald's poem 'Essay on Memory', and it epitomizes how the cultural history of modernism can be restructured according to a radically different discursive map. Backgazing intellectually reconfigures US and European modernism within a planetary orbit in which the literature of Australia and the Southern Hemisphere, far from being merely an annexed margin, can be seen substantively to change the directional compass of modernism more generally.

By reading canonical modernists such as James Joyce and T. Eliot alongside marginalized writers such as Nancy Cunard and others and relatively neglected authors from Australia and New Zealand, this book offers a revisionist cultural history of modernist time, one framed by a recognition of how its measurement is modulated across geographical space. Lee Miller was a captivating, beautiful and talented woman, whose adventurous life exemplifies the changing world for women in the 20th century.

She left the fashion world for France and an art apprenticeship in , and in Paris, under the tutelage of modernist Man Ray, Miller was taken—both with photography and with her mentor. But when he and Lee were working together, he opened up a little more. The exhibition is the first to give both artists equal consideration. The show, divided into the phases of their relationship, including a section of works from artists in their circle Picasso, Dora Maar, and Le Corbusier among them , is at once a love letter, an unrequited love song, and a toast to dear old friends. The final section of the show is largely composed of little presents Ray made and sent to Miller that were meant to cheer her up during darker times in her later life.

Man Ray and Lee Miller were together in Paris from to , three short years. But like a pebble that life casually skipped on the water, this particular time and place instigated ripples and reverberations for both protagonists and, this exhibition maintains, for art history. If the latter is true, it is not least for emphasizing that artists are people, and that it is out of their often flawed natures, relationships, and communities of influence that some of the most vital art emerges. It can be claimed that both Man Ray born Emmanuel Radnitzky, — and Lee Miller — deserve to be even better known. Miller is another story altogether, and a comparatively shorter one. A cover girl turned artist, she followed her time in Paris with a peripatetic career as an art, fashion, portrait, and, finally and definitively, intrepid wartime photographer. In the early s, suffering post-traumatic stress that manifested as acute depression following the war, she retreated from her professional life as an artist to live on a farm in England with her husband, the British Surrealist painter Roland Penrose. But even this is a complicated statement, as the exhibition subtly demonstrates at every turn.
