So how can I help you get predictable results? Depending on where your head is at, this type of rejection can come as quite a blow. Luckily these rude dismissals are rare and your response to them is a no-brainer.

Turn the tables on rejection

No one likes rejection. It was hard when I was dating and it was hard when I was starting out as a writer. The two things — dating and writing — do have some things in common. In both situations there are emotions involved. You are putting yourself out there making yourself vulnerable. It is more than just selling a widget that you made.

When you try to sell what you write you are offering someone — an editor — a piece of yourself. No matter the reason they say no, it still is going to feel a bit like you are being rejected. It is the same in dating. When you ask a girl out, you are putting yourself out there and at least implying that you want her to consider being friends and maybe more.

Which is worse? I figured out that being rejected was not as bad as not having what I wanted. I preferred being rejected to not having a date, and I preferred a rejection slip to never seeing my stories published. It was not that I liked rejection. I was just choosing the less bad of two bad things. I overcame the fear of rejection by realizing I would be accepted some of the time. One or two acceptances erases the bad taste of rejections. Writing is easier in a way because it is not as personal.

In those days we mailed out letters and got letters back in the mail with rejection notices. There was no personal contact. Today it is an email and it is faster. Still the rejection is not usually in person. I have attended writers conferences and had personal rejections from editors, as well as false promises and even a few acceptances that resulted in a nice byline and a pretty nice check. In asking a girl out, there was personal contact, and you had to look her in the eye when she said no.

That always hurt more. I never lacked confidence in my writing. People around me told me I was a good writer before I was even a teenager, and I liked what I wrote. It just never occurred to me that it might not be any good.

I ended up in the Newspaper business and had some success there as a writer. I always have kept my fingers in freelancing though, and now I am freelancing for most of my income.

The girls were a different story though. I started out with a good attitude, but was not real confident. At some point I decided I was not attractive to girls. Two experiences changed my outlook, and my fortunes as well.

The first one came when there was this really nice girl in high school. I was crazy about her. She did turn me down though, every single time I asked her out. It was not until a year or two later, that a friend of mine told me that the girl did like me, but refused my advances because she knew she was moving away and thought it would be too much trouble. For whatever reason, she had chosen me to be her playmate for a time. A very lucky break my freshman year of college changed my attitude.

We had a short term, whirlwind romance that rocked my world. It lasted a couple of months and she let me down gently and moved on. She had chosen me as a playmate — I knew it was short term from the start.

So there was no woman out of my league from that day onward. But those two instances showed me the reality of rejection. So I came at writing and dating from different angles to start with, and both involve rejection.

I came out with the same attitude toward both. Yes there is some rejection, and it never feels good when it happens. Even so, the rewards do come to those that persist, and they are worth whatever bad feelings you might get from rejections along the way. Understanding how the system works is huge.

The other person — whether it is a nice lady or a magazine editor — has certain wishes or needs, or things they are looking for. They may already have all they need too. There are lots of reasons they reject your proposition, and many of them have nothing to do with you. There is also the matter of personal taste, and that has an impact too.

Rejection is hardly ever personal, and once you realize that deep in your soul, you can handle it well. Try to not think of it as rejection. Think in terms of, they just chose someone else, and that is closer to the reality anyway. Rejection is never fun, but you do get used to it. So here is my call to action. If you like my story, give it a clap or three or four. I would be interested in any comments you may have as well. Sign in. Turn the tables on rejection.
